Mrs. Beatrice Decker Young of Grassy Creek died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at the Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson. She was 87.
Mrs. Young was born on March 27, 1926, in Amherst, Va., to Donnie Homer and Georgia Sage Decker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Darrell Young.
Mrs. Young was a faithful member, treasurer and song leader at Pleasant Home Baptist Church. She was a very active member of the community, volunteering for the board of elections, and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Beatrice was a caregiver for her parents and her husband until their deaths. She worked with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service teaching people how to cook, and later she worked in the cafeteria at Lansing Elementary School and Northwest Ashe High School. She enjoyed cooking, needle work, knitting and crochet.
Mrs. Young was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed.
Mrs. Young is survived by son, Jerry Young and wife Laura of Crumpler; son, Kenneth Young and wife Mary of Grassy Creek; daughter, Freda Porter and husband Dalton of West Jefferson; daughter, Sandy Roten and husband Joe of Creston; daughter, Debbie Roten and husband Ronnie of Crumpler; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; four step great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Pleasant Home Baptist Church by Rev. Julian Owen and Rev. Lonnie Carpenter. Burial followed in the Waddell-Young Cemetery.
The family received friends on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
