Alexandra Russell Mettler died peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Sunday, the twenty-seventh of November. Alexandra was born on November 17, 1940 in Savannah, GA. She graduated from Savannah Country Day School. She attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Emerson College in Boston, Hunter College in New York City and received a BA in Journalism from Georgia State University in Atlanta. She worked as an editor for many years for Southern Accents magazine and Atlanta Magazine. She was delighted to have been a member of the The Every Saturday Club, QUELDICK (a Women's Liberal Democratic Caucus), and the St. Bartholomew's Book Study Group. She studied French for many years at Alliance Francaise in Atlanta; her fluency in French made her a valuable contributor to the preparation of manuscripts for the publication of The Letters of Samuel Beckett. Just a few weeks ago, she proudly attended the launch of the fourth and final volume at Emory University. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the visual, literary and theatrical arts. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas H. Mettler, Jr. (August 8, 2004) and is survived by a sister, Sara Russell of Savannah, GA; son, Christopher Mettler of Clearwater, FL; daughter, Elizabeth Mettler (Murphy Wolford) of Athens, GA; granddaughter, Charlotte Wolford of Athens, GA; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Midtown Assistance Center in Atlanta, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens, or the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support in Athens. A memorial service and celebration of Alexandra's life will be held on Friday, December 2nd at 2PM at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
