Adelina J.T. (Lina) Valdez entered into new life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.Lina was born on Dec. 3, 1933, to George and Fidelia Torres in Shoemaker. A lifelong Catholic she was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.She graduated from Las Vegas High School where she met the love of her life Anselmo (Al) Valdez. Al and Lina were married on June 3, 1953, and celebrated 63 years of marriage.Dating as young teens, Al would visit her at the ranch where Lina taught him how to shoot and hunt. In later years, she took her sons, Joseph and Victor, to the shooting range and taught them to shoot.Lina commented how they never invited her to go hunting because she would probably show them up. She was an excellent shot.Lina was also an accomplished artist. What began as a hobby, developed into a God-given talent. She said her very first artistic attempt was as a young girl on the ranch. She drew a face on a piece of wood and fashioned it into a doll for her niece who wouldn't stop crying. Lina loved to paint, and when she was inspired she was in a place that gave her immense joy. She shared that joy with others. Everyone who owns a piece of her art, owns a piece of her heart.When Lina wasn't in her painting room, she could be found in her kitchen preparing favorite dishes for her visiting children, grand- and great-grandchildren: green chile stew for some, blue corn enchiladas and her posole for others, her very special sweet rice for everyone and, yes, even a peanut butter and mayo sandwich for someone special.Over her lifetime, Lina belonged to several civic and religious clubs and organizations. In 1969, Lina and Al became founding members of the Las Vegas Fiesta Committee when the city was not willing to continue the fiestas which had been a long- standing tradition for more than a century. It is to their credit, along with other committee members, that Las Vegas and surrounding communities continue to celebrate this tradition. She was a current trustee of Woodmen of the World, Lodge 2. She and Al have owned Gambles and Valdez Enterprises since 1983. Al started his career with Gambles in 1956, and when the company was closing its stores, he credits Lina with encouraging him to buy it themselves. A man with dreams needs a woman with vision. Lina was that and more to him.She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Fidelia Torres; several brothers and sisters, brother, Nick Torres (2015); her beloved granddaughter, Andrea Valdez (2009), brother and sisters-in-law, Emilio and Rita Valdez, Aurora Herrera, and Mary Torres.She is survived by her husband, Anselmo (Al) Valdez; their six children, Valerie (Dr. Ronald) Monteverde, Rosemarie Valdez, Joseph (Sonia) Valdez, Victor (JoAnn) Valdez, Maxine (James) Ortiz, and Maria Elena Valdez (Jonelle Baca); grandchildren, Dominic (Rebecca), Matthew, and Cristina Monteverde, Robert (Teri) Romero and Mrs. Vanessa Terry-Jackson, Tanya, Joseph Jr. (Kayla), Daniel (Vanessa) Valdez, Victoria and Joshua Valdez, Aaron (Vicki), Loren, and Shannon Ortiz; 14 great- grandchildren; sister, Cecilia Scott; her niece raised like her sister, Patricia Gallegos; dear nephew, Richard Torres, in-laws, Virginia (Wilfred) Quintana, Andrew Valdez (Mary Romero), Alex (Nora) Valdez, Beatrice Baca, and Tony Valdez; her God-children, Trina Sanchez, Ursula Garcia, Cindy Moritomo and Charlie Cantrell and many very special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; her Gambles family, Tony (Virginia) Apodaca, Debbie Erickson, Wanda Esquibel, Florencio (Estelle) Garcia, Eloy Gonzales, William (Yvette) Maes, and Victoria Perea, and of course Thunder, her loving pet. Lina's foremost vocation was that of wife, mother, grandmother, which also included teacher, adviser, nurse, confidant, friend, and prayer warrior. Her journey into heaven will be lined with the flowers she lovingly tended to in her yard here on earth. She closed each phone conversation with ""I love you, God Bless You"".... so, we love you! God bless you! Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas. Funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father C John Brasher as celebrant. Family is accepting flowers, and memorials may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Prayer Garden. Serving as Urn bearers will be Robert Romero, Aaron Ortiz, Dominic Monteverde, Joseph Valdez, Jr., Matthew Monteverde, Daniel Valdez and Joshua Valdez.
